Asch the Bloody | Tales of the Abyss (Not Reserved)
Name: ten.
Age: Over 18.
Personal Journal:
Contact: Plurk: artillerate.
Other In-Game Characters: None.
Character (Original Universe)
Name: Asch the Bloody.
Age: 17.
Gender: Male.
Canon: Tales of the Abyss.
Canon Point: After his last breath, before he turns into fonons.
History:
He was born and raised as Luke fon Fabre until he was kidnapped and experimented on at the age of ten. When he managed to escape and return home, he discovered his family, friends, and fiancee all had accepted a copy of him as Luke. Van Grants, the man who'd experimented on him, then and there convinced him to cast away his past and start a new life as Van's pupil and servant.
For the next seven years, Asch trained as a soldier and worked under Van to become 'Asch the Bloody', a God-General. He was loyal to and extremely dependent on Van until he discovered Van's true plans to replicate the world and destroy its originals. After that, Asch became a double agent, obeying Van's orders under scrutiny while working against him behind the scenes.
Early on, Asch uses others to obtain a means of contacting and controlling his replica. It works, and Asch goes on to mock the replica while telling him what to do. The replica becomes distrustful of Asch, ultimately resulting in the major destruction of a mining town and catalyzing a war between two powerful kingdoms. After Asch and his replica have a fight, Asch uses their connection to reveal Van's plans.
After that, the two separate ways but otherwise keep in touch, working together to stop Van while being apart. Each even has the same plan to sacrifice himself with ten thousand replicas to save the world, and both survive the atomic reaction that follows. Similarly, they both fall into the same trap on the way to confronting Van. But since only one of them could leave, they battle to determine who's 'stronger'. After his defeat, Asch urges Luke ahead and later succumbs to his injuries.
Personality:
Asch was an incredibly mature ten year old; seven years later, he's now a relatively childish and immature teenager. He's bitter, angry, and guarded, but also a truly moral character who wants for the good of others.
As Luke fon Fabre, he was raised to become a future leader. He had high standards and had to live up to great expectations. His parents were distant for various reasons while noble stature set him apart from commoners and servants; his closest bonds were with his fiancee Natalia, his personal servant Guy, and his trusted mentor Van. At age ten, he was kidnapped and put through excruciatingly painful experimentation. But his dedication to the people who needed him—his family, fiancee, and the people of his country—drove him to escape and brave many difficulties to return home. When he arrived, he discovered that his family, fiancee, and servants had already accepted a look-alike in his stead; he lost almost everything he had—his purpose in life, identity, family, fiancee, kingdom—which planted the seeds of bitterness and hatred for replicas.
Despite his tremendous losses, he managed to pull himself together with the help of his kidnapper and only remaining link to his past: Van. Since then, his underlying personality hadn't changed too much because of his isolated life as Van's pupil and unquestioningly loyal servant. As Asch the Bloody, he remained unwaveringly dedicated to his country and desired only good for its people. He maintained high expectations and standards for himself, becoming prideful and confident of his capabilities. Even though he had cast away his past identity, he continued to love and feel concern for his parents despite his bitterness toward the love and affection they showered on his replacement. And he continued to love his fiancee Natalia, upholding her on a pedestal unreachable by any other and untouchable even for himself.
His world has almost entirely revolved around Van for the past seven years, but now his love for the world outweighs his beliefs in Van's ideals. While his decision to defect from Van is strongly influenced by his hatred for replicas, it's important to note that the replication process physically hurts. like. hell. As he's already experienced it and understands that it can ultimately kill an original, he can't accept plans to replicate the human race and eradicate all the originals. But disagreeing with and working against Van doesn't mean Asch is willing to work with anyone else unless it's absolutely necessary; he knows what he has to do and doesn't want others getting in the way or slowing him down, so he prefers working independently.
Asch can be difficult to work with: he's assertive and critical, strictly holding everyone to impossibly high standards. He takes things seriously and expects others to treat him as such; he usually stands tall and strong, puffs himself up to look proud and confident despite being shorter than many other men around him. (But not Sync and Ion. Win!) He quickly becomes angry when he and others don't live up to his standards and expectations, but from minor mistakes to complete failure, he doesn't allow himself to sulk. If he might express anything other than strength or confidence, he might turn or simply walk away. Asch doesn't handle being wrong very well; often without thinking, he retorts with insults, insists illogical arguments, and/or storms off at inconvenient times. Despite that, he's intelligent, has a wealth of worldly information, and can be quite the strategist despite his social downfalls.
According to the Dark Wings' discussion about who Asch talks about most, the people who are most important to him are Van, Natalia, and his replica. He cares about Guy's opinion even though Guy hates him and is Luke's best friend. Naturally, he is linked with the other God-Generals through his appointed position. He also has connections with circus performers called the Dark Wings, a group he trusts enough to continue hiring for various assignments. Asch has used his position as God-General to make many more connections to halt Van's plans; among these are Ginji, who pilots the Albiore III, and Spinoza, who was initially one of Van's spies. Asch's leadership qualities and concern for the people shines beyond his brash attitude, garnering the trust and respect of others. Most people are able to look beyond his angry, guarded front and see he's a good boy with deep-seated morals who really wants only for the good of the people.
Beyond his general personality, it's worth noting that Asch's attitude toward his replica gradually changes as the game progresses. While his initial feelings are those of hatred, Asch eventually develops conflicting feelings based heavily on identity issues borne of his replica's existence. His hatred stems not only from the physical agony of replication but also the way that his loved ones accepted a seemingly cheap substitute in his stead. He feels that the replica exists as his replacement, displacing him as a person and effectively taking away his reason to live. Because he believes that his replica must live the life that it had stolen away, it only follows suit that Asch holds Luke to the same impossibly high standards and expectations he has for himself.
Naturally, he feels disgusted when, years later, he sees his replica and discovers an ignorant, selfish, and spoiled brat incapable of defending itself, let alone taking care of his kingdom and fiancee. He's so bitter that he tries to kill the replica a couple times before hatching a plan to use it to foil Van's plans. However, this backfires when Asch's bullying drives the replica to outright ignore his warnings and follow Van to the point of destroying Akzeriuth. So after that, Asch works harder toward molding his replica into a proper replacement to execute his role in life, take care of his people, save Auldrant from the miasma, and defeat Van. He feels pressed for time since contact with the replica is gradually and unintentionally killing him. Because he's dying anyway, Asch thinks it won't matter what happens to him so long as the replica could properly fulfill his role as Luke fon Fabre. Although Asch doesn't want to admit it, there has always been a part of him that is like his replica and others; he wants to live, and continually seeks a purpose or a reason to exist.
Many of Asch's arguments with the replica stem from an inability to see himself and Luke as two different beings performing different parts of the same role. He can't understand and feels insulted by his replica's lacking self-confidence; he becomes even more offended when the replica tries to return to him the life and role of Luke fon Fabre. Asch rejects Luke as his replica when he decides he isn't good enough, attempts self-sacrifice to atone for Akzeriuth, and abandons the other responsibilities that come with being the "Light of the Sacred Flame". It angers Asch so much that he challenges Luke to a battle of self to decide once and for all who would be the stronger of the two and bear the responsibility of defeating Van. After Asch is defeated, he comes to terms with the fact that they're two parts of the same whole; he reclaims his share of responsibilities as Luke fon Fabre, entrusting the rest to his replica before succumbing to his injuries.
Third-Person Sample: TDM.
Mognet Sample:
[Anyone who gets this letter should note it looks as though written by a small woodland creature rather than a person. Because Luke and Asch's handwritings are indistinguishable, and Luke's handwriting is said to look like a cheagle's.]
To other Heroes of Light,
Just recently, I arrived in Aqures Ixen, where so many Heroes are based that free lodging is no longer available. The government has apologized for this oversight, but it's hardly a high-priority matter, so there probably won't be a resolution anytime soon. In the meanwhile, there are still incoming Heroes who don't have a place to stay. Count me as one of them.
Now, it's not small or easy to ask this of complete strangers, but I'm requesting to temporarily room with another Hero. I shouldn't be imposing for long, and would only stay long enough to secure a residence of my own. I'm keep things neat and tidy, and don't have many belongings or need anything lavish or fancy. And I can earn my keep as necessary, from working to cooking or cleaning.
Like I said, I know it's a lot to ask when we probably don't even know each other. But we can work things out through Mognet or arrange to meet in person.
Regards,
Asch

REVISIONS REQUEST
* We would like a little more detail as to Asch's history. If you have a Wiki link, this can be substituted easily.
* The personality section often blurs into character history, and might be easier to review if it separates the two clearly and concisely. While canon examples are great to support this section, they shouldn't override the primary function of listing how the character thinks and behaves in general. Please organize the personality section accordingly.
You have 72 hours to submit your revision. If you feel this is not enough time or if you need clarifications regarding the revision request, then please feel free to contact one of the moderators, we will get back to you as soon as possible.

History: Asch the Bloody (Tales Wiki)
Personality:
On the surface, Asch is a relatively childish and immature teenager. He's bitter, angry, and guarded, but he's also a truly moral character who wants for the good of others.
As Luke fon Fabre, he was prophesied in the Score to die and bring unprecedented prosperity to his kingdom. Because of this prophesy, Asch was raised to be a leader but grew up with only a few close bonds. Between his isolated childhood upbringing and training under Van, Asch isn't good at expressing himself and can be very blunt and brash. However, he maintains great love and dedication to the people, not only in his kingdom but as a whole. And even after discarding his past and identity as Luke fon Fabre, Asch still loves his family, loved ones, and especially his fiancee who all had accepted someone else in his stead. So in spite of his attitude and social downfalls, his leadership qualities and concern for the people shines through, helping him garner other people's trust and respect.
Asch can be difficult to work with because he always takes things seriously and strictly holds everyone to ridiculously high standards. Because he expects others to do the same, he can come off as bossy and overbearing. Assertive and critical, he's quick to anger when he and others don't meet his expectations. He may overreact to anything from a minor mistake to complete failure, but he doesn't allow himself to sulk because he feels pressed for time since he knows he's gradually dying as a result of his replication. That said, he prefers working independently because he knows his own plans and what he has to do, and he doesn't want others getting in the way, slowing him down, or messing him up. And he's prone to arguments, and gets even more cantankerous when he's wrong, in which case he retorts with insults, insists on illogical arguments, and/or storms off at inconvenient times. Usually without thinking.
Initially, the two motivators that significantly affect Asch's actions are his love for the people and his hatred toward replicas. The latter stems from not only physical agony of replication but also the psychological anguish of being replaced by his loved ones. It inevitably drives him to cast away his past and almost unquestioningly devote himself to Van's ideals. However, after Asch learns the details of Van's plan, he decides to defect because of his love for the world—he can't accept the idea of replicating the human race and eradicating all the originals.
Asch's view on and attitude toward replicas, especially his own, gradually change as the game goes on. They're intrinsically tied to his identity, reason to live, and his actions and decisions toward the end of the game.
From his own perspective, his loved ones had replaced him from the moment they accepted his replica as Luke, thereby displacing him as a person and effectively taking away his reason to live. His replica is the succession of who he used to be, consequently making him an extension of Asch himself, meaning that Asch expects him to live up to the same impossibly high standards of his stolen life, and to fulfill his purpose as Luke fon Fabre. But because his replica can't live up to those expectations, Asch feels he has every right to mock, bully, and even outright kill him for being an incompetent failure and ignorant, selfish, spoiled brat who is incapable of defending himself, his kingdom, and his fiancee. Naturally, Asch's pettiness backfires on him because it drives his replica to completely ignore his warnings and instead seek reassurance and approval from the only one giving it to him, thus sealing Akzeriuth's doom.
After the fall of Akzeriuth, Asch takes on a different approach toward molding his replica into a proper replacement to fulfill his purpose as Luke fon Fabre, take care of the people, save Auldrant from the miasma, and defeat Van. Although he seems overly focused on making sure his replica continues being Luke fon Fabre, the reality that Asch won't admit is there's always been a part of him that is like his replica and others; he wants to live, and continually seeks a purpose or reason to exist. Like the replicas, Asch feels that he doesn't have a place in the world, and moreover already knows he's dying anyway, so he might as well make sure that his replica keeps doing what he should as Luke fon Fabre. As far as Asch is concerned, whatever happens to him is no longer important. Because of this, he doesn't understand and feels insulted by his replica's lacking self-confidence. He becomes even more offended when the replica tries to give his past, identity, and purpose back. And he even rejects Luke as his replica when he decides he isn't good enough, attempts self-sacrifice to atone for Akzeriuth, and abandons the other responsibilities that come along with being the "Light of the Sacred Flame".
What neither Asch nor his replica seems to realize is that even as they work together, arguing every step of the way, they each manage to perform different functions of the same role that is otherwise known as Luke fon Fabre. Because they're perfect isofons, they're both the Scion of Lorelei, and the responsibilities of Luke fon Fabre are merely split between them like the Key of Lorelei. Asch only seems to realize this after losing the battle of self with his replica, urging his replica to go after Van while he handles the small fry, knowing what little time he has left and ultimately emerging not as Asch, but as Luke fon Fabre. He dies shortly afterward, but not without contacting his replica first and entrusting the rest of their responsibilities to him, finally resolving a long-standing, bitter self-conflict.
