Monsters have grown in numbers in the world of Crystallis these past twenty years. They generally stay away from cities and places where the population is high in density, but otherwise they can attack anytime, anywhere. Fiends, monsters and spirits cannot be negotiated with unless mentioned, and seem to be driven by a desire to kill the livings. This list repertories known monsters and where they appear. When visiting a location in the context of an event or mission, a monster list will be provided and new monster species will be added in the future. With the awakening of the Calamity, a new category of monsters has appeared: friendly monsters. Friendly monsters will not harm characters, but will give them a +1 Month bonus tp their equipped Jobs if they fulfill their requests. Characters new to Crystallis have higher chances to encounter friendly monsters, making it a good way to max out their Jobs. If they try to attack them however... |
![]() ADAMANTOISE ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Region of Mysidia Drop: 5 000 Gil A large turtle with high defenses and strength, it is very resistant and hard to defeat. It is not very dangerous however for well-prepared Heroes of Light, as it may easilly be killed with ice spells. It attacks primarily by creating earthquakes or attacking directly its enemies. |
![]() BEHEMOTH ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Plains of Sorrow, Region of Downapolis Drop: Golden Crystal (10%) The Behemoth is one of the deadliest enemies that can be encountered. It can protects and heals itself with magic, but it can also attack enemies with it. Behemoth is the only monsters that can use the Ultima spell, and be sure it will make use of it without any warning. |
![]() BOMB ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Region of Aqures Ixen (red), Lost Continent (blue) Drop: 1 250 Gil, Bomb Fragment (25%) Bombs attack enemies with fire spells, but this isn't why they are dangerous. With each attack dealt to them, they grow bigger. After striking at them three times, they self-destruct in an explosion that can seriously harm its enemies. Better take the Bomb down in a single strike with a powerful Ice (for the red variant) or Fire (for the blue variant) magic. |
![]() BUER ✶ ✶ Location: Calm Plains, Region of Trano Golsaucia Drop: 100 Gil A weak enemy that possesses only one attack, a psychic stare that can confuse its enemy. It is hard to hit and requires precision attacks, but is otherwise easily taken down. |
![]() CACTUAR ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Island of Cactuar Drop: 25 000 Gil, Speed Booster (25%), Cactuar Doll (1%) These little cacti are nearly impossible to hit, but they can hit hard with their attack "1000 Needles". This attack will take down instantly the weakest characters and grievously wound those of mid-level. Either way, odds are that the battle won't last long enough for characters to suffer this attack. Indeed, Cactuars generally flee from battles very quickly. |
![]() CHIMERA ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Desert of Roalie, Old Hera Island Drop: 5 000 Gil, Potion (100%), Water Crystal (10%) Chimeras are abominations made up of a lion and two snakes. Each of the creature's head can attack. The lion attacks with physical attacks, whereas the first snake head casts Aqua Breath. The second head can cast Fire Breath. Chimeras are resistant against physical and magical attacks alike and count amongst the hardest monsters to defeat. |
![]() COCKATRICE ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Island of Flence, Region of Balicea Drop: 1000 Gil, Wind Crystal (10%) Cockatrices are gigantic birds possessing a special attack that can petrify their enemies. Whilst Cockatrices are fairly weak monsters that can be defeated with ease, they are extremely dangerous when fought alone. It is always better to be at least two to face this enemy, in case the beast petrifies one of the fighters. |
![]() DRAGON ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Crystal Forest, Region of Mysidia Drop: 20 000 Gil, Dragon's Heart (10%) Dragons are very rare, and that's a chance. As they can fly, their mobility is beyond that of other monsters. They are as resistant as Adamantoise and more powerful than them. They are weak to ice and sometimes can drop a Dragon's Heart, which can be infused into weapons to double all physical attacks. |
![]() DRAGON ZOMBIE ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Crystal Life Tree Drop: 10 000 Gil, Elixir (10%) Dragon Zombies are defeated dragons that have refused to move on and return to the First Crystal. Whilst they are as dangerous as their regular counterpart, they are not weak to ice and can inflict status ailments. It is said however, there is a way to instantly kill them... |
![]() ELEMENTAL ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Lost Continent (white), Region of Aqures Ixen (red), Island of Flence (blue), Region of Hera (yellow) Island of Aqures Tosf (black) Drop: 500 Gil, Elemental Crystal (5%) Floating runes animated by magic, Elementals can only be defeated by mages. They come in different color and absorb the magic of the corresponding element. Furthermore, they also attack with magic of this very element: blue = water, yellow = electricity, red = fire, white = ice, black = darkness. The only way to defeat them is to cast unto them spells of the opposite element. |
![]() ETTIN SNAKE ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Region of Hera, Island of Old Hera Drop: 2 500 Gil, Antidote (50%) A snake with two head, the left head cast fire breathes onto its enemy, whilst the right head physically attack with poisonous bites. Its resistance makes the snake a fairly though enemy to take down. |
![]() GARGOYLE ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Continent of Balance (night) Drop: 1 250 Gil Gargoyles attack most of the time with wind-based attack, though they are not beyond trying to rip their target apart with their claws. Weak enemies individually, the problem comes from the fact they never attack alone; they will always be encountered in groups of three at least, six at most. |
![]() GEEZARD ✶ Location: Everywhere Drop: 1 Gil, Orichalcum (0.0001%) The weakest monster one can encounter in the world of Crystallis. Its attacks are weak and it is weak against everything. Nobody takes them seriously, and it's a little bit sad. |
![]() GOBLIN ✶ ✶ Location: Northern Continent of Balance Drop: 20 Gil, Potion (90%) Small and very common humanoid creatures, Goblins count amongst the weakest monsters and are a joke even for beginners. However, they can be an annoyance as they sometime steal Gils or Items from their enemies, before fleeing from battle and disappearing without leaving a trace. They attack with knives and their most powerful attack is Goblin Punch. |
![]() GOLEM ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Lost Continent, Aqurean Forest Drop: 1000 Gil, Phoenix Down (25%) Giant humanoids composed of rocks, Golems possess very powerful physical attacks. They attack with their fists, and can easily catch heavy rocks to throw at their enemies. Furthermore, magical attacks deal very little damage to them. They are however fairly weak enemies for well-prepared warriors. |
![]() HAMSTER ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Continent of Balance (extremely rare, night only) Drop: 10 000 000 Gil, Hamster Fur (100%), Mythril (50%), Mega Crystal (1%) Fluffy, cute and altogether adorable. Yet... Deadly and poisonous, these Hamsters will attack with characters with a poisonous bite. The poison will kill them within two minutes if left unattended. In a mild-case case scenario, Hamsters will summon dozens of their friends and attack the characters, biting them to death. Worst case, hundreds of these hamsters will come to devour the character. And only limit breaks or highest level attacks can harm them. And even then, it will take numerous attacks to take them down-- If you can even hit them. Indeed, Hamsters are very small and agile. Escaping is the better option here. |
![]() IRON GIANT ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Ancient Ruins, Mysidian Tower Drop: 10 000 Gil Weapons once created by the Ancients. Some are still active whilst some have been re-activated by the natives in an effort to understand Ancient technology. These machines are unparalleled swordsmen and their body is entirely made of metal. However, fire attacks work well on them and can get the best of them, as do gravity-based attacks. |
![]() LONG GUI ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Plains of Sorrow Drop: 100 000 Gil These gigantic creatures are big enough to just stomp of the Heroes of Light and kill them that way. They are not dangerous when left alone, but if attacked they will prove just stomping the ground may be enough to kill enemies after hours spent fighting. Indeed, killing them may take hours, sometimes entire days: a battle against them shouldn't be taken lightly. They cannot be taken as Monsters for a Beastmaster. |
![]() MALBORO ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Island of Aqures Tosf, Calm Plains (rare) Drop: 22 000 Gil, Ailment Crystal (5%) Malboro are among the most deadly monsters that exist in the world of Crystallis. Not only are they resistant to both physical and magical attacks, but their attacks are enough to instantly kill the weakest characters. Their most dangerous attack is Bad Breath: it will instantly blind, confuse and poison an entire party, in addition to muting characters and preventing them from using magic. In rarer case, Bad Breath can even turn characters into a frog. |
![]() MANDRAGORA ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Calm Plains, Aqurean Forest Drop: 200 Gil Basic enemies that attack with poison attacks. Their most dangerous attack is their scream; if allowed to scream for too long, they can knock out a character. They are weak to fire and resistant to both Water and Ice. |
![]() MECH GUARD ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Magitek Research Facility Drop: N/A A security unit that can be found and activated in the Magitek Research Facility. It is not very dangerous, as it is quite weak and ancient. A character with the Steal skill may disassemble the machine within an instant without any difficulties. Otherwise, physical attacks may work, but Thunder spells are by far the most effective way to take this machine out. |
![]() MECH GUNNER ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Magitek Research Facility Drop: N/A A security unit that can be found and activated in the Magitek Research Facility. It is more dangerous than its smaller counterpart, and cannot be disassembled with the Steal skill. Physical attacks do work, but like with the smaller model, Thunder spells are the best way to go with this security unit. It attacks with ancient gun models integrated within its armor. |
![]() MEDUSA ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Region of Aerilon, Region of Balicea (very rare) Drop: 1 Gil, Money Bag (100%) Humanoid with snakes in place of her hair, Medusa share with Cockatrice the ability to petrify her enemies. Unlike the Cockatrice however, she can also cast water magic and inflict poison ailment on their enemies. Upon being defeated, for unknown reasons Medusa releases an impressive amount of Gil (10 000 to 50 000). |
![]() MIMIC ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Everywhere Drop: 10 000 Gil Mimics take the shape of treasure chests to lure their victims. If a character tries to "open" the treasure chest, Mimic will burst out as a full enemy, taking advantage of the surprise to attack him or her. They are not very strong, but they benefit of the element of surprise. It is impossible to distinguish a regular treasure chest from a Mimic prior to opening it. |
![]() OCHU ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Region of Trano Golsaucia, Aqurean Forest Drop: 3 500 Gil, Electricity Crystal (10%) A plant-like monster with four thorny arms, the Ochu doesn't hit hard and is weak against fire. However, the strength of Ochu come from the status ailments they can inflict onto their targets: poison and sleep. It is better not to be alone when facing one. |
![]() RAPTOR ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Region of the Temple of the Heroes of Light, Ancient Ruins Drop: 20 000 Gil, Raptor's Claw (10%) Fast, incredibly intelligent and agile creatures. On their own, they don't look like much. But Raptors never attack alone. If you see a Raptor, at least two more are around, hiding to ambush you when you least expect it. Their claws can rip apart a human within seconds, all the better for them as human flesh is their favorite dish. |
![]() SAHAGIN ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Calm Plains, Region of Aerilon, Region of Balicea Drop: 700 Gil A spear-wielding walking turtle, the Sahagin is very resistant to magic and absorbs water-based magic. It attacks either with its spear or a water beam, and is best taken down with physical attacks. |
![]() SEEKER BAT ✶ ✶ Location: Continent of Balance (night only), Island of Flence (night only) Drop: 100 Gil These special kind of bats have a taste for blood. Thankfully, they're too weak enemies to be a real threat to anyone, so long as the characters are well-equipped and prepared. They are afraid of light and avoid well-lit places. |
![]() SKELETON ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Region of Roalie Drop: 800 Gil, Fire Crystal (10%) These skeleton are rather weak, even though they attack in group. Their weak attacks and lack of coordination make them easy targets for fighters, even though one should remain careful. Sometimes, the number of skeletons attacking at once can be overwhelming. |
![]() T-REX ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Region of the Temple of the Heroes of Light Drop: 100 000 Gil, Mythril (30%), Mega Crystal (0.5%) The king of all monsters. Meeting one in battle is a dead sentence. You cannot outrun him, wounding him may take forever and it can kill anything that moves. Both magical and physical attack deal half-damages against it, and whether it is with its teeth, claw or tail, the T-Rex has the means to kill an enemy. The only monster more dangerous than the T-Rex is the Hamster. |
![]() TONBERRY ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Island of Aqures Tosf, Nabilan Mountains (rare) Drop: 15 000 Gil, Knife (25%), Tonberry Doll (1%) These creatures are very slow and extremely resistant to all kind of attack. They seemingly never attack and simply walk toward their targets, slowly. If attacked, Tonberry counters with Karma, an attack that deals back to its enemies the exact damage they caused. If ever a Tonberry manages to reach its enemy, it will then use the attack Chief's Knife: which instantly kills the attacked character. |
![]() TOUCH ME ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Calm Plains, Island of Flence, Nabilan Mountains Drop: 250 Gil A small and seemingly inoffensive dancing frog, Touch Me can actually turn its enemies into frogs simply by touching them. Using the skill Frog Song, it can both turn its enemies into frogs without even touching them, and put them to sleep. Worry not: a mere remedy or Esuna spell can cure from the frog ailment. Otherwise, they are weak enemies easily taken down. |
![]() WYVERN ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Calm Plains, Region of Aerilon Drop: 5 000 Gil, Light Crystal (10%) Dragons that lack forearms, Wyverns are extremely dangerous creatures. Like all dragons they fly and attack from high with devastating fire breaths. Exceptionally unlucky characters may encounter two of them at once, though it is very rare. They are, obviously, very resistant to both magic and physical attacks. |
![]() ZOMBIE ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Location: Island of Aqures Tosf Drop: 500 Gil, Darkness Crystal (5%) Frightening enemies, Zombies are much smarter than their cousins, the Skeletons. They can zombify their enemies when attacking them, and then grievously harm them by casting potions or heal spells onto them. Thankfully, this weakness applies to them as well: they die very easily when attacked with curative magic. |
Friendly MonstersFriendly monsters will gift characters with +1 Month to their equipped Jobs if their request is fulfilled. To get the +1 Bonus, you must log or thread the encounter with the monster, there is no handwaving this. The odds of finding a friendly monster are very low the longer you've been in Crystallis though, and are as follow: 0-6 Months: One friendly monster per month 7-12 months : One friendly monster every two months 13-18 months: One friendly monster every four months 19+ Months: No more friendly monsters |
![]() CAIT SITH Location: Region of Aqures Ixen, Calm Plains Cait Sith will ask any Heroes of Light he encounters 2 000 Gil. If they fulfill his request, he will bless them with +1 month of experience on both equipped Jobs. Should they meet him again at a later point, Cait Sith will ask 5 000 Gils. After that, the price will always double, making him a good starter to raise some level, but in the long-term an expensive one. If he is attacked, Cait Sith will meow in pain before summoning two Chimeras and disappearing. |
![]() FEATHERED RAPTOR Location: Southern Continent of Ruins This wounded raptor will approach any Heroes it encounter and ask them to heal its wounds. If the Heroes do so, the Feathered Raptor will grant them +1 month for both their equipped Jobs. If they attack him, he will summon three regular Raptors before disappearing. |
![]() GREEN DRAGON Location: Northern Continent of Ruins This friendly Dragon will not try to fight upon encountering the Heroes of Light. Instead, it will ask them to give it a crystal: either a regular one they found, or their own. Upon doing so, the Green Dragon will grant them +1 month for both their equipped Jobs. Characters will die if they give it their own crystal, though they'll be back as usual. |
![]() MU Location: Region of Trano Golsaucia A friendly rodent, Mu will ask any encountered Heroes of Light to light a fire for him, as it always seeks new sources of warmth in the Lost Continent. Upon doing so, he will gift them +1 month of experience on both equipped Jobs. Mu becomes harder to find after it's been met once. If he is attacked, Mu will summon two White Elementals and a Blue Bomb before disappearing. |
![]() MAGIC POT Location: Region of Balicea The Magic Pot will always ask for an Elixir to anyone it encounters. If an elixir or mega-elixir is used on it, it will thank its benefactors by offering them +1 month of experience for both equipped Jobs. If attacked, the magic pot is next to impossible to harm and it will just stand there. Should characters attack it still, after a while it'll summon three Malboros before disappearing. |
![]() NYMPH Location: Region of Aerilon The Nymph will ask whoever she encounters to give her a crystal, and sometimes her requests may be for specifics crystals. Should a character fulfill her wish, the Nymph will thank them by granting them +1 month for both of their equipped Jobs. Should she be attacked however, the Nymph will summon four Medusas before disappearing. |
![]() FLOWERING CACTUAR Location: Region of Esdham, Cactuar Island This very special Cactuar will ask anyone it encounters to water the flower sprouting from its head. Should a character use a water spell or find another way to water the flower, Flowering Cactuar will grant them +1 month for both their equipped Jobs. Should the Flowering Cactuar be attacked, it will summon four regular Cactuars before disappearing. |
![]() FEATHER CIRCLE Location: Region of Flence This friendly monster will always ask refined food from the Heroes of Light it encounters. Should its wish be granted, it'll offer +1 Month to both equipped Jobs. If attacked or given rotten food, it'll summon three Cockatrice before disappearing. |
![]() ROBOROVSKI HAMSTER Location: Region of Hera, Island of Aqures Tosf A fluffy, cute and altogether adorable hamster. This one is smaller than the regular Hamsters and will ask anyone meeting him to pet him. Should they be brave enough to do it, the Hamster will reward them with +1 Month of experience for both of their equipped Jobs. Should they be foolish enough to attack him, the Hamster will summon five regular Hamsters before disappearing. |
