Gaara of the Desert | Naruto | Not Reserved | 2/???
Name: Gaara of the Desert
Age: 15
Gender: Male
Canon: Naruto
Canon Point: Naruto Shippuden, episode 9. Akatsuki member Deidara infiltrated Suna in the dead of night, and Gaara fought against him. He managed to catch Deidara and destroy one of his arms, which prompted Deidara to resort to more drastic measures. He used the village’s safety to his advantage, and Gaara proved his devotion by focusing his efforts on protecting his people. When Deidara’s clay spiders exploded on Gaara in close range, he was nearly knocked unconscious, and only had enough energy to choose one of two options: save himself, or save the village. His decision was the latter, and then he passed out after moving his enormous sand shield away, swiftly getting kidnapped by Deidara.
Former Game:
Canon History: Canon.
Game History:
Purg was set in a world with three cities. Gaara woke up in City Two, where the technology was way more advanced than what he knew. In an effort to gain information, he immediately agreed to join a mission to infiltrate the underground laboratory maze, led by one of the game’s NPCs. The small group ran into three monsters and had to kill all of them, in order to proceed. What they didn’t know, was that each fight would be isolated, after it started. Gaara ended up killing one of the monsters by himself, and then assisted an ally in taking on another monster. After all the monsters were defeated, they reached the laboratory, where they learned some new facts about the world they were stuck in. At the end, he chose to return to City One instead, full of people that were too happy and helpful – sometimes to creepy extents.
Within just a month of arrival, Gaara was quickly targeted by a winged monster ala Jeepers Creepers. The monster was also stalking two other people in the game – Hajime Hinata and Riku. Since they were all targets, Gaara got to know them, little by little. While they weren’t friends with each other, he considered them allies, and protected them whenever he could. About a month later, the monster subdued and kidnapped Riku, and Gaara set off to save him alone. In his mind, it made more sense to only risk a single life, and he felt that he was equipped to handle the situation. Riku’s friends and other allies jumped in to help, and they were successful in rescuing him. Unfortunately, one of Riku’s closest friends had gotten killed by the monster, which affected quite a few people, even after he returned to life.
The following month, mistletoe started appearing in each city, with Christmas approaching. Because Gaara has zero knowledge of that tradition, he got caught under the mistletoe with a few of his allies and friends. The effects differed depending on the color of the plant, so he exchanged hugs, kisses, and even shared a dance with Kurakai. After maintaining emotional distance since the very beginning, Gaara finally began to accept the concept of friendship. His trust issues made it difficult for him to get close to anyone, but he still tried his best to help others in need. It was around this time that people started calling him their friend. Luke even accused him of being an idiot, and didn’t understand why he kept everyone else behind barriers.
From speaking to Lavi and Sora, Gaara learned that apparently, they had already met him before, in a different setting called the Facility. Based on this interaction, Gaara has realized the existence of other worlds, as well as multiple versions of people. This knowledge bothers him, because he has gone through identity issues in the past, and is trying to change for the better. If he ever meets different versions of people that he knew in Purg, he will be wary and guarded. He also knows that people can come in from different time periods, since Sai was very cryptic about telling him anything regarding his future. Although Gaara wouldn’t test this in other settings, he is fascinated by the concept that death isn’t always permanent, depending on the rules of the world.
Personality:
It is very common for people to change as they grow up and go through different experiences, but Gaara has changed drastically since his introduction in the series. His mindset seems to take a complete 180 after his fight with Naruto; he immediately apologized to his siblings, and then a month later, even returned to aid Konoha in their mission to retrieve Sasuke Uchiha from the Sound ninja. Gaara went from being a completely self-centered tool of destruction to selflessly sacrificing his own well-being for the sake of his village. Moments before his death, he was very pensive and wondered if anyone ever needed him, why he was struggling so hard to assume a different identity, and whether or not his existence meant anything.
Even with all his changes, a few attributes have remained the same. Gaara has always been fairly reserved and introverted, making him a difficult person to befriend. Due to past events, he has notable issues with trust. He is rather anti-social, mostly derived from his experiences as a child. He can contend with solitude on occasion to gather his thoughts, but he doesn’t like to be alone all the time, to feel abandoned by others. That being said, given his interaction with Yashamaru, Lee, and Sasuke, singular obsession is a distinct trait of his. Because he is not a social butterfly by any stretch of the imagination, Gaara would rather be in the company of very few close friends rather than a large group of strangers.
Gaara is intelligent as a shinobi, but because of his exclusion from social interaction for the majority of his life, he will seem naïve – or even stupid – to most people. It takes a lot of understanding and patience to deal with someone like Gaara. He would likely understand the significance of certain things, but not actually know how to use them in application, such as social trends, fashion, or slang terms. Things like flirting and being hit on definitely fly way over his head. For the most part, he speaks properly and formerly after the time skip, which is likely derived from his position as the leader of his village. When he is around people that he feels comfortable with, he talks in a more casual way.
Though he doesn’t understand a lot of social norms, Gaara isn’t unwilling to try new things in order to expand his knowledge. He doesn’t like being ignorant, because people already have reason enough to not take him seriously. But he would be hesitant and attempt to figure out the purpose behind it before committing the action. If something seems unimportant and pointless, he will feel less inclined to do it. At initial meeting, he will guard himself carefully and distrust most people until he has properly assessed the situation. He will slowly open up to others and begin to trust them once he figures out who can be an ally and who should be avoided as an enemy, and certain canon mates will affect the trust process.
According to the databook, Gaara became a Chunin at 14 years of age. His rank further ascended to Kazekage approximately one year later. There were no specifications as to whether or not he attained the rank of Jonin before becoming the Kazekage – it was only mentioned that he is a young Kage. But the fact that he was able to advance three ninja ranks in two-and-a-half years says a lot about his intelligence, abilities, and determination. In his profile, his favorite word or phrase listed “love (the kind of love such as I love my country),” and “future,” further exemplifying his new more positive outlook. Becoming the Kazekage of Suna gave his life meaning, and he can now serve a purpose that he feels is worthwhile.
Proving that age pales in comparison to the fruits of experience, Gaara is confident of his abilities as a shinobi, but as a person, his flaws are much more obvious. As he is human, he makes mistakes, he has insecurities, and there are times when he weakens and needs support. On the surface, he seems selfless and caring toward other people, with little regard for himself, but that is due to his background, as well as his position. As Kazekage, he has a reputation and expectations to maintain, for the sake of his village. His actions reflect on Suna, so he will act accordingly, whenever he is able to. Though despite his formality, Gaara isn’t particularly polite. He refers to the other Kage by their titles, but doesn’t use suffixes in association with anyone’s name, aside from his father.
Given his background and extensive training, Gaara can be cold and calculating to a fault. While normal people are likely appalled by fighting or death, Gaara would not be fazed in the least bit. He is a ninja, and was raised as a weapon of destruction for so long that both aspects seem natural to him. He also used to brutally torment his victims as a child, after losing his mind, so the concept of torture won’t perturb him. His sense of logic may seem twisted, as well as his morals and ethics, but he doesn’t usually mean ill intent. As with most shinobi, Gaara is capable of manipulating people and circumstances to suit his needs, yet prefers to use those tactics as last resorts. He abhors lying, and would much rather be bluntly – sometimes painfully – honest than to blatantly deceive someone.
Though it is human nature to be selfish, Gaara has been conditioned to consciously deny his own wants and needs. His desires are just not important enough to pursue, in the bigger picture. From childhood to present, he was always told that the village came first, regardless of even family relations, as clearly evidenced by his father. When he becomes the leader of Suna, he completely devotes himself to his duties and doesn’t know the meaning of “leisure time.” Underneath his stoic exterior is someone yearning to be loved and wanted and needed and cared for. He tries to do what is right, not necessarily because he wants to, but because it is expected of him, and might help him get acceptance.
When it comes to obeying authority, Gaara has a tendency to be rebellious. In his younger preteen years, he didn’t want to follow orders from anyone. Baki ordered his team to stay in their assigned room, and Gaara left on his own, multiple times, without telling his siblings. He only begrudgingly obeyed his father because Rasa was strong enough to subdue him, if he ever fell out of line. Later on, even after his change, Gaara defies his council when it comes to missions, his development as a shinobi, and policies involving the village. He can definitely be cooperative and work well as a team with most people – if he agrees with the course of action. If not, then he will take off on his own and do what he thinks is necessary, regardless of the risks.
Gaara is philosophical by nature and very curious, often questioning many things in life. He is particularly interested in hearing about bonds of friendship and family, as well as people’s reasons for existing. Emotions are another big topic of interest for him, since he is still learning about them. Discussions of family, morality, and self-identity would hit really close to home for him, but he won’t deny his past or run away from the truth. There are, however, some parts of his life that he will refuse to talk about, lest he risk becoming emotionally or mentally unstable. Patience and persistence will eventually get through his toughest barrier.
The subject of love interests Gaara a great deal, and he will try to analyze and understand it whenever given the opportunity. At this point, he believes no one in his family ever loved him, which is a sore topic that he will refrain from divulging. His current relationship with his siblings is tentative at best, as they are still mending the circumstances that kept them separated for years. But Gaara is aware of his past mistakes, and tries to make up for them, even if he happens to screw up the first few times. Since he has been exposed to familial and patriotic love, the last type for him to learn about is romantic love. In the light novel that takes place when Gaara turns 20 years old, he tries to conduct research on relationships by reading Icha Icha Paradise.
An important fact to keep in mind regarding this particular canon point is that Gaara knows his village doesn’t fully accept him, let alone loves him. All he has ever known is hatred and fear from the Suna villagers, throughout his entire life, so his insecurities have plenty of merit. Even after being elected Kazekage, most of his own people still don’t trust him. After he left Kankuro and Temari to join the regular platoons, the high-ranked officials continued to send assassins to kill him, which he warned Kakashi about. The younger generation in Suna doesn’t show disdain too openly, but support from them has minimal influence, since Gaara needs to work together with the older generation to get anything done.
One common misconception is that Gaara will remain cool, calm, and collected, no matter what, and basically has the personality of a brick wall. On the contrary, Gaara has always been emotional, as shown by all the times that he became enraged in the past. He just doesn’t know to express or identify them individually, for the most part. If his triggers are pulled or he gets pushed to his mental limits, then anger will typically be the first emotion that he falls back on. He will try to keep a level head and maintain control whenever he can, but he is definitely capable of emotional outbursts. But given the stringent training of Sand shinobi, and most of the attitudes they exhibit, it’s clear that they have been taught to control their emotions very carefully.
In addition to his conscious commands, his sand can also react based on his emotions – as seen when he rampaged around the village as a child – so there might be times when it seems to act independently of his will. His father intentionally tested him when he was younger, to see if Gaara could ever fully control the demon within him. Ironically, his uncle’s betrayal gave him that forced calmness and emotional stability, but at a high price. Even now, Gaara has to constantly struggle to keep his emotions steady, and acts nonchalant more often than not. When he is calm and composed, his sand won’t be a danger to others, unless he chooses to make it deadly. This tends to be a bigger problem during the full moon, when Shukaku’s influence is stronger than usual, and threatens Gaara’s control over himself.
While this inept ninja is more prone to walking off from awkward social situations, he does want to change his lonely situation. In his childhood, Gaara was willing to reach out to other kids, over and over, despite their constant rejections. He tries his hardest to be friendly with them, and helpful, by retrieving their ball, or bringing medicine to a kid that he accidentally injured. For the most part, Gaara seems confident to the point of arrogance, but he is actually very shy, when it comes to certain things. In a filler episode about his first bond, when his comrades told them they were his friends, he quietly asked them to repeat those words, while timidly looking away. It’s likely that was the first time anyone has ever told Gaara they wanted to be his friends.
