Eventually, the Calamity found its way to Crystallis. This development took the Ancients aback and they turned to their technology in the hope to defeat it. To this end, they repurposed one of their ongoing efforts: the WEAPON Project. These were biological and mechanical entities created specifically to subdue the subjects summoned from other worlds should they go out of control—I, of course, refer to those who would become the Heroes of Light. Because of the similarities between Heroes of Light and the Calamity, repurposing the WEAPON Project in an attempt to fight the Calamity was an easy task. A total of six creatures emerged from this project: Diamond, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Jade and Ultima. As of this day, only the existence Diamond and Ultima has been confirmed. The other WEAPONs might have been destroyed in the course of previous cycles.
However, the Ancients failed to complete the WEAPON Project in time. But where they failed, their test subjects rose and took up arms against the Calamity. With the help of dissident Ancients led by the Princess of the Heran, the Job System was created so they could access their powers and fight the Calamity. What we nowadays refer to as “Custom Jobs” were the norm when the system was first created—A loophole exploited by the Heroes of Light to gain access to their powers. It is my belief that these “Custom Jobs” were the ancestors of today’s most common Jobs: Black Mage, Warrior, Thief, etc.
But in spite of their efforts, the Heroes of Light couldn’t prevail against the Calamity. They were on the verge of defeating it—But could never finish their task. No matter what they did, it would simply regenerate and negate any blows dealt to it. They didn’t know then that the Calamity resided in the Rift and what they fought was only a fraction of its being. It became evident the Calamity couldn’t be defeated. As such the only option was to seal it away. But what of the future? Any seal would break down with time, long after the Ancients and Heroes of Light alike would have died out.
This is when the original inhabitant of Crystallis, those who were born on this world long before the Ancients colonized it, stepped forward. In the wake of their king’s death, the Moogles worked together to create a guardian: a soul born from the deceased Heroes of Light and Ancients killed by the Calamity. A soul born from the Chaos wrought by the Calamity in order to bring it Order. They modified this soul so it could never be absorbed back by the planet and so it would be reborn perpetually, for as long as Crystallis and the Worlds beyond would need to be protected from the Calamity. This is how Garland came to be.
However, it is unknown exactly how Garland came to be who he is, where his personality came from and what motivates him. Whilst it is evident his successive rebirths have all followed the original will, it is doubtful the Moogles had intended for the cycle to be eternal. At the same time the Moogles did this, the Ancient partook in a different effort, creating the four crystals sustaining our world to compensate for the failing of the First Crystal. Is it possible the Ancients somehow intervened in Garland’s creation—Maybe even changed his original purpose? At this time, it is impossible to say with certainty what happened back then. For all of my research and findings, much of the truth eludes me.
All I know for certain is that at the end, thirteen Heroes of Light remained. They refused to abide by Garland’s plan, but were left with no choice. They would sacrifice themselves, rejuvenating the four Crystals and enough of the First Crystal so that Crystallis might be strong enough to entrap the Calamity. The ancient scripts I found indicate they asked the Moogles of that time to live on for them and to guide all future Heroes of Light, to help them find a way to stop Garland and the Calamity. And as of this day, even if they are not aware of it, the Moogles are still abiding by this covenant.
