Your Job and You: A Brief and Informative Look into Job Classes

Part 1: Regular Jobs, and How They Come and Go

Your Hero begins the game with one or two job classes assigned, beginning with only the initial skills (the exception so far being Heroes apped after the 4th Wall event, who started out with 12 months EXP assumed). Heroes with a single active job class will be more efficient at that one job, while Heroes with two jobs active will have access to twice as many skills, but with slightly less aptitude.

Some jobs have secret ???? skills that can be unlocked by purchasing key items from Oaka XXIV’s Shop. These skills do not have to be acquired to achieve mastery of that job. The job is considered ‘mastered’ when all of the normal skills are earned through Exp Points (usually 12 months).

Heroes can initially hold FIVE jobs, three or four of which are held in reserve. Once the Hero masters their first job, their job limit increases to TEN jobs. Only equipped jobs gain experience (until a certain level of Onion Knight has been reached, see below), but having jobs in reserve allows characters to switch between their active jobs and their reserve jobs. Switching jobs must be done by the Hero’s moogle, and it can only be done once every two weeks. Jobs cannot be switched during events or battles. Whatever Job Class(es) a Hero has equipped when they enter an event will be the only ones they can use until the event is complete.

A Hero can add a new job to their Crystal reserve two ways. First off, a Hero can request a job from one of the NPCs. They will usually be required to complete a quest in exchange for this service. A Hero can request a job from the NPCs once every 30 days. The second way is when new jobs are unlocked. They are made available to the Heroes, sometimes with a skill bonus. Heroes can choose to add them to their Crystal Reserve if they have space for them. If the Heroes do not have room for the new job, they can discard another job to make space on it. Any job that is discarded will lose the experience the Hero put into it. For example, if your Hero has a full reserve and discards Warrior (6 months) to make room for the new Bearer of Wisdom job class (initial bonus of 6 months), they will now have Bearer of Wisdom (6 mo). If they then want to become a Warrior again, they will need to make room in their reserve, request the job from the NPCs again, and start from 0 months. If, instead, that Hero had chosen to NOT incorporate Bearer of Wisdom into their reserve when it was offered, they could add it later, but once again, they would requet it from the NPCs and start from 0 months. Job experience can only be stored for jobs held in Crystal Reserve. Once again, the limit increases from 5 to 10 whenever your Hero masters their first job, but it is still important to use reserve space wisely!

Part 2: Advanced Jobs, for the Advanced Hero

Now that you are mastering jobs, it’s time to get fancy! Certain jobs pair so well (or so weird) with others that they unlock exciting new skills. The Job Page has a list of all the Advanced Jobs currently available to the Heroes. Each Advanced Job comes with 4 new skills. The Initial Skill is unlocked as soon as that Hero equips those two jobs together, regardless of how much experience they have at either job. A second and third skill becomes available when each of the jobs within that combination is mastered, with the Final skill being unlocked with BOTH jobs are mastered.

Note, all the normal strengths and weaknesses and the normal skills for the two job classes will apply to the Advanced job, and the Advanced job will still take up BOTH ACTIVE JOB SLOTS for a Hero. This means Advanced Job/Regular Job is not an option. The advantage to equipping the Advanced Job is in the bonus skills that are made available, but otherwise, the Advanced Job functions as two individual jobs.
Part 3: Onion Knights, Revealing the Mysteries so They Don’t Bring Tears to Your Eyes

Onion Knight is a weird job, and does not function like the other jobs on the Job List. Onion Knight is not available as a starting class for new Heroes, nor is it acquired by NPC request. Instead, it appears automatically in a Hero’s Crystal Reserve when the Hero masters their first job. It does not take up a reserve slot, and it increases the Hero’s reserve spaces from 5 to 10. You can think of Onion Knight as increasing your Hero’s inventory. It allows them to carry around more jobs!

After mastering THREE jobs, the Onion Knight skill ‘Multi Exp’ allows the other jobs held in the Hero’s Crystal Reserve to receive 1/4th of the experience points that Hero regularly earns for each of their active jobs. Passive Experience is doubled by participation in events. If the Hero has participated in the events that month and has earned Double Exp, this means that their Active Jobs will each receive 2 months of Exp, while each of the (up to 8) jobs held in reserve will receive 1/2 of a month. After TWO months of Double Exp for event participation, the Hero would end up with a total of 4 months Exp for each of their active jobs and 1 month Exp for each job held in reserve.

After SEVEN jobs have been mastered, the Hero can use the Onion Knight’s ‘Double Exp’ skill and receive DOUBLE EXPERIENCE FOR ACTIVE AND RESERVE JOBS. This replaces the ‘Multi Exp’ skill; each month onward, jobs held in reserve will receive ½ months Exp instead of 1/4. Note, unless the Hero has an Experience Orb (see details below), this Double Exp can only be used toward the jobs that the Hero is holding that have not been mastered. Once a job is mastered, the Exp points it gathers are not able to be used elsewhere without the use of an Exp orb.

From EIGHT mastered jobs onward, the Hero must actually equip Onion Knight as one of their two ACTIVE jobs in order to use the final three skills.

Part 4: Custom Jobs, Being the Best You You Can Be

Is the assortment of jobs available not quite right for your character? They can work in Palitutu’s laboratory and connect their Hero Crystal to the Job network to regain some of their skills from home. More details about how Custom Jobs work can be found here.

Custom Jobs function the same as a normal job in that skills can be unlocked over time by gaining Exp points. The Custom Job takes up a job slot in the Hero’s reserve. Only the Hero who creates the Custom Job can use it, however. Even if two Heroes have the same abilities or ‘jobs’ back on their shared homeworld, they cannot share a custom job. The Custom Job will only become available to the rest of the Hero population in the event that the Hero holding the job dies permanently (see ‘Bearer of Wisdom’ on the Job List).

Custom Jobs can be submitted on the Custom Job page. There will be an in-game delay in receiving the job, as the Hero will have to devote time to working on creating the job in the Lab.

If a Hero has more skills than can fit into a single Custom Job, they may be able to simulate their original abilities by utilizing Advanced Custom Jobs, coming soon?

Part 5: Experience Orbs, Maximizing Efficiency and Doing Math

Does the thought of letting precious experience go to waste make you sad inside? Do you have SO MUCH GIL and nowhere to spend it? Ask your moogles if an Experience Orb is right for you.

Experience Orbs can be purchased from O’aka XXIV’s shop, which can be requested here. (Note, they are expensive, and the Heroes must reasonably be able to pay for them in order to purchase one.)

The Experience Orb is active for a period of SIX MONTHS, after which it shatters. During that time, it collects the Exp Points that the Hero earns for their active jobs and allows them to be stored and divided between the Jobs the Hero holds in their Crystal as that Hero wishes. Exp cannot be transferred to another Hero, though Orbs that have not been used can be given to someone else.

For example, if a Hero with an Experience Orb participates in a Double Exp event, they will bank 4 months of Exp in their orb if they do not have any Onion Knight modifiers. They can choose to allocate this Exp equally between their two active jobs, place all the Exp into a single job, put some or all of the Exp into one of their reserved job, etc. After mastering 7 jobs and unlocking the ‘Double Exp’ skill, a Hero could potentially acquire 8 months of Exp. The Orb does not collect passive experience gained from Onion Knight abilities. The maximum number of Exp Points an Orb can bank is 8 Months per month*, if a Hero has the Double Exp skill and has also participated in the monthly event.

*The limit of the Exp Orb is increased during months with Triple Exp for event participation.
