Eventually, the Ancient found the answer to their problem. Indeed, their research brought to light the existence of the First Crystal. For convenience’s sake, I will refer to the First Crystal simply as the Crystal from there on. The Crystal rests in the planet’s core and regulates the flow of life on this world. When someone dies, their soul goes back to the planet and then to the Crystal. Their memories are relinquished within the Crystal and once their soul has rested, they return to the planet and are ultimately born anew. This is the cycle of life and reincarnation on Crystallis. The task is monumental and over the years, the Crystal’s energy has waned. As such the solution was simple: all the Ancients had to do was revitalize the Crystal. The means to do so however were not so simple.
To live, lifeforms have to kill other lifeforms. Whether it is to eat, to defend oneself or for any other reasons, death is the means through which life persists. This is a universal truth which we do not question, as our very survival is dependent on accepting it. The Ancients became aware of this paradox—Life and death are opposite notions and yet one and the same. But what about worlds and universes? They are very much like us. They are born, they live and eventually they die. Would it be right for a world to survive longer at the cost of other worlds? Can we apply the logic by which we strive to a larger scale?
The Ancients’s answer to this question was yes. If they could drain spiritual energy from another world, they could use it to revitalize the First Crystal. Repeating the process, they could live eternally. Doing so would result in the death and destruction of the targeted worlds, but by their logic it was no different from killing other lifeforms to feed oneself. And so using their technology, they looked past the Interdimensional Rift and searched for worlds which would be apt to revitalize the Crystal. To this end, they built a Soul Divider—A machine existing for the sole purpose of filtering and recycling the spiritual energy drained from other worlds and cycle it into the Crystal in order to revitalize it. This machine is gigantic and covers the entire planet’s underground through a maze of crystallized caves, reaching down to the Crystal itself. From our perspective, the main infrastructure of the Soul Divider looks like a gigantic tree made of crystal.
The Ancients thus attempted to absorb the spiritual energy of a world to revitalize the Crystal, but this first attempt failed. The world which they tried to reach resisted assimilation and fought back. The results of this failed attempt were horrific: the targeted world was destroyed and the surface of Crystallis was ruined for a hundred years. After looking into the failure, the Ancients realized they needed a catalyst for the assimilation to be successful. Something to ease the process, a medium between Crystallis and the target world: a lifeform originating from the world to be assimilated. Not just any lifeform, but one connected in a decisive manner with their homeworld, whether it is in a positive or negative fashion. And so on their next attempt they used the very technology they had once used to find Crystallis. They summoned someone from the world to be assimilated. A special red crystal was produced to serve as the link itself—Containing all of the lifeform’s past, present and future.
However, this second attempt failed as well. The one they summoned fought against them with powers the Ancients had never seen before. Chaos ensued, many were killed before the subject was subdued and as expected, the assimilation failed once more. Frightened, the Ancients devised a means to seal the power of all future summoned subjects. Their mistakes were numerous and with each new failed attempts, their situation grew more and more desperate. They observed that the subject’s crystal had been red: the color of foreign worlds. After further research, they reached the conclusion they needed to build a link between the summoned subject and Crystallis for the assimilation to be successful. Furthermore, they conducted extensive research on the world to be assimilated and the individual to be summoned, collecting data to properly seal their powers and be able to face any situations.
The third attempt was a success, and when the red crystal turned into the blue of Crystallis, they could assimilate the world without resistance. But the energy gathered from a single world wasn’t sufficient. Over 99.9% of the assimilated world was rejected and left to drift in the Interdimensional Rift. The quantity absorbed was too weak to revitalize the Crystal. Hundreds if not thousands of worlds would be necessary. And this is when the Ancients committed their greatest sin. They summoned thousands of lifeforms from thousands of different worlds. And with this the Crystal was revitalized, but all of their worlds were lost.
These people whom the Ancients summoned to Crystallis—They weren’t known as such yet, but they were the first “Heroes of Light:” puppets used to facilitate the assimilation of their homeworlds into Crystallis.
