1) Yes, variations are allowed for costumes. In most Final Fantasy games, Jobs' costumes are adapted to better represent the personality and story of each characters when they equip a Job, regardless of the Job. Likewise, in Melodies of Life Job costumes can come with such variations.
2) Yes. If for example you decide to app, say Sauron from the Lord of the Rings, the armor shown in the movies would work just fine as his default for Dark Knight. Likewise, if you app Vivi from Final Fantasy IX, his default works just fine for the Black Mage Job. In this case, yes the Freelancer outfit could be another set of clothes from their homeworlds or from Crystallis itself, should they lack any.
3) Yes. So long as the outfit fits the Job pattern (ie, armor for knights, robes for white mages, etc), it is a possibility.
